• This chapter is like an explosion going off… You think you have Jonah all figured out and then this happens… Jonah goes off on this incredible rant.

Passage: Jonah 4:1-11

 Big Idea: We all need God’s grace again, and again, and again, and again…

• Talk about how God’s grace not only saves us from the penalty of sin (i.e. Jonah not facing the penalty for his sin), but also saves us from the power and presence of sin.
• Penalty: God’s anger poured out against sin – past for Christian
• Power: Sin’s power over our lives – Present – This is what I want to focus on tonight.
• Presence: Sin’s presence in our lives – Future

Main Points:

• Mission reveals things we like to keep hidden.
  
• We are all drawn to worship things other than God.
• We all are drawn towards self-righteousness

SCANDALOUS Lesson #3: Responding to God’s Grace

 Introduction:

• Tonight we finally meet the whale…
• The whale is almost as famous as Jonah.
• We think of Jonah and the Whale like we think of David and Goliath, Zacheus and the Sycamore Tree, peanut butter and jelly, cereal and milk…you don’t have one without the other.
• This is why the story of Jonah is soo famous… because everyone always talks about Jonah and the whale.
• But as we’ll see tonight the whale only takes up 2 verses.
• Instead of focusing on the Whale, I want to focus on Jonah inside the whale and then his trip to Ninevah… in both of these we will see people who are responding to God’s grace.

Big Idea: God’s grace demands a response.

• God’s grace motivates us to seek him.
• God’s grace draws us to repentance.
• God’s grace leads us to be gracious towards other people.

• We left Jonah last week on a boat, and that’s where we pick him up this week.
• He has rejected God’s call to go preach to Ninevah and instead has made his way to a boat to head for Tarshish.

Big Idea: There’s more to sin and grace then meets the eye.

• Sin has a downward drag.
• God’s anger links arms with his grace.
• Storms can be idol crushers.
• Hope: Jesus is the true and better Jonah
