Church Matters Graphic 2

What’s the Point of Church?

Attention Funnel: Where’s The Wonder? (Natural Wonders)

  • Victoria Falls – Zambia and Zimbabwe; Northern Lights – Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia; Paricutin Volcano – Mexico; Grand Canyon – Arizona; Harbour – Brazil; Mount Everest – Nepal; Great Barrier Reef – Australia

 Introduction:

  • Refresh from last week – Why should I care about the church?
  • This week – What’s the point of Church?
  • I want to make the argument tonight, that just as those natural wonders, and all of creation exists to make us see how great God is… so also does the church.
  • In other words, just as the natural wonders should make us step back and say “WOW,” so should the church.
  • So to answer the question… What is the point of the church? I would say, “The Church exists to make God look great.”

Big Idea: The church exists to make God look great.

 Passage: Ephesians 3:7-11

Knock-Offs

 Attention Funnel: What’s More Valuable

 Introduction:

  • We have been looking at different knock-offs of the gospel over the past 5 weeks. They are messages we consciously or unconsciously believe that shape how we live. And we’ve been trying to show how the true gospel is both different and better.
  • Tonight we finish up this series with the Self-Esteem Gospel.
  • Now, to make sure we are all on the same page, what do we mean by self-esteem?
  • Self-esteem is confidence in one’s own worth or abilities. It’s feeling good about yourself and not easily having that feeling taken from you.
    • “To fall in love with yourself is the first secret to happiness.”
      – Robert Morley
  • The self esteem gospel sounds good on the surface because it focuses on getting us to feel better about ourselves… but it misses some really important things about the gospel.

Big Idea: The gospel forces us to get our eyes off ourselves. (more…)

Attention Funnel: Good Things Becoming Bad Things – Trampoline, Skateboard, Snow, Diving

 Introduction:

  • Good things can quickly turn bad.
  • This is something we know from experience… (Story from your own life).
  • This can also be a way for us to understand sin. Sin is often taking something good and using it for the wrong purposes.
  • It’s often not just “doing bad things,” but it is good desires that run wild. And go off the tracks.
  • We could say this with what we have covered the past two weeks: comfort, and money.
  • This week we will say the same thing about food (and many other categories of things we enjoy in this world)

Big Idea: Enjoy God’s gifts, but don’t worship them.

Main Points

  • Food is a gift from God.
  • We can turn food into a god.
  • Idolatry is absurd and offensive to God.
  • Fight back with fasting and feasting.

  • Jesus is Great, so we don’t have to seek to be in control.
  • Jesus is Glorious, so we don’t have to find favor the opinions of others.
  • Jesus is Good, so we don’t have to look elsewhere for happiness.
  • Jesus is Gracious, so we don’t have to prove ourselves or fear failure.
