Attention Funnel: Video of girl telling people they are beautiful.

 Introduction:

  • I want to say first of all, this lesson is probably more geared towards girls.
  • But I do want to say that I think we are still effected by the things in this lesson guys. There is still a pressure to have a certain body type and look a certain way, we just don’t experience nearly the same pressure that the girls do.
  • Guys – I want you to think about how you view and treat the girls around you. Who are you more likely to give your attention to? Who are you more likely too make feel special? I want you to think about as men, does our way of treating women line up with how God treats them (and us).
  • Girls – I want you to be freed from feeling like you have to measure up to a certain ideal of beauty in order to be valued and loved. I want you to be able to more and more stop comparing yourself to other people. And I want you to pursue a beauty that is not just marked by skin and body.

Mixed Message: You will be loved if you are beautiful.

Big Idea: You are loved therefore you are beautiful.

Passage: Song of Solomon 1:2-15; Ephesians 5:25-27

Main Points:
The ideal of our culture is impossible to measure up to.
The culture says if you measure up you will be loved.
God says that because you are loved you are beautiful.

Attention Funnel: Animals with Low Self-Esteem Videos

Mixed Message: The key to happiness is a healthy self-esteem.

Introduction:

  • What is self-esteem?
  • It’s the overall judgment we have of ourselves. How do I view myself? How do I see myself? Do I see myself as good-looking? Do I see myself as funny? Do I see myself as smart? Do I see myself as popular? Do I see myself as athletic? Or do I see myself as a failure? Do I see myself as an outcast? Do I see myself as someone who could never be loved? Do I see myself as weird? Do I see myself as awkward?
  • Another way to look at this is what’s the first thing you think when you look in the mirror in the morning?
  • Or, What’s the first thing you think when you walk into a crowd of unknown people?
  • Or what are you thinking about when you walk into school?
  • See we all have a certain view about ourselves… We all think of ourselves in ways that may or may not be true.
  • We may have a high view of ourselves – thinking we are God’s gift to the world.
  • Or we may have a low view of ourselves – thinking that we are unworthy of other people’s attention.
  • Or maybe we fall somewhere in the middle.

Big Idea: The gospel helps us to think about ourselves less.

Passage: 1 Corinthians 3:21-4:7

Main Points:

  • We all have a self-esteem problem.
  • A life of self-forgetfulness frees us from the self-esteem problem.
  • The gospel creates self-forgetful people.

Series Introduction:

  • There are certain ideas that we seem to naturally believe.
  • They are messages that we have been submerged in whether we realize it or not.
  • They are things that we have heard over and over again and have come to accept as true.
  • But often these things are not true. Often these messages turn out to be false, and maybe even destructive.
  • Over the next three couple weeks I want to look at several of these ideas that I think we tend to believe and live according to that aren’t true. We are going to look at freedom, purpose, and beauty.

Lesson Introduction:

  • We’ll talk about the first one tonight: Freedom.
  • Mixed Message: Freedom means doing whatever you want to. Throw off anything that holds you back and do whatever feels right.
  • The idea is that freedom means you are your own master. You are only free when you are able to do whatever you want, whenever you want to.
  • And don’t let anyone look down on you who tell you that you should be different.
  • The only person you should really listen too is YOU!
  • The more that you let other people tell you what to do, who to be, or how to live, the less free you will be, and therefore the more unhappy you will be.
  • Picture Elsa in Frozen. When she is forced to hold in who she is and has to wear gloves around everywhere she is miserable, but when she is able to let it all out, “Let it Go,” then she thinks she is finally free.
  • Pitbull – “Freedom” ; Miley Cyrus – “We Can’t Stop”
    • Feel free, do whatever you want, whenever you want, with whoever you want. Feel free, who cares what they say?”
    • We run things, things don’t run we. Don’t take nothing from nobody.” It’s our party we can do what we want. It’s our party we can say what we want. It’s our party we can love who we want. We can kiss who we want.”
  • But this idea of freedom is false and can be very destructive and painful. Paul shows us this in Romans 6:15-23.

Big Idea: Freedom is living as God designed you to live.
